Guest Artist Spotlight with Lex Sorrentino of Sculptural Emanations
This Month Art Dolls Only is thrilled to have Lex Sorrentino of Sculptural Emanations as our Guest Artist Spotlight .
I began sculpting 23 years ago and being self- taught, my minimal training has left me free to approach clay sculpting with no preconceptions as to how it ought to be used.
My choice is Fantasy/Whimsical art, which show the diversity of different clays and how they can be incorporated with many mediums to produce interesting, beautiful and quirky creations.
I have been teaching weekly classes and Workshops for 22 years in Canberra and have exhibited and sold work locally and internationally with many of the works published in several Australian and American magazines.I also run an Art/ Craft Retreat in Canberra once a year. The Contemporary Craft Retreat is now in its 8th year and attendees come from all over Australia and NZ to attend many of the workshops available. www.contemporarycraftretreat.com.au
Q. Lex, please tell us a little about your dolls and how long you have been creating them.
A. I Love Fantasy…. anything weird and wonderful! I’m self taught and have I’ve been making dolls for 23 years. I use Polymer Clay, Makins Air Dry Polymer and Apoxie Sculpt……my fave is Apoxie Sculpt.
Q. How has your practice changed over time?
A. I love to experiment so my creations are constantly changing.
Q. Where does your inspiration come from?
A. Out of my head !!! There is soooo much waiting to escape and become reality. Sometimes a crystal or fabric can inspire me too.
Q. Do you have a favorite doll that you’ve made?
A. My Favourite would have to be the Dragon keeper
Q. What memorable responses have you had to your work?
A. I was told My and (Janice’s) shared Gallery exhibition in Canberra was the most popular for 2017. Made my day as I was uncertain how people would respond.
Q. What advice would you give new doll artists?
A. Don’t give up if your doll looks like an alien….keep going, you will be amazed with the end result. Also, your own body is a great teacher!! If you need to sculpt a foot, check out your own!!!
Q. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
A. “You must become grounded before you can fly”….. guaranteed to give better results!!
Q. Finally, what are you currently working on?
A. I am currently working on SHIVA. It is an order which will be going to India next month. (I haven’t done enough to share a suitable pic) Hopefully Lex will share with us when she’s finished.
